From there he was accepted to the medical school at the University of Kansas, Kansas City, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 1998. He then attended the University of Kansas, Wichita, where he completed his orthopedics surgery residency from 1998-2003.
It was during this time period that Dr. Van den Berghe began to develop interests in shoulder surgery and sports medicine.
After completing his orthopedic residency Dr. Van den Berghe completed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at San Diego Sports Medicine & Arthroscopy in 2004.
While completing his fellowship he received specialized training to care for athletes and patients with complex shoulder injuries. During this year he also served as one of the team physicians for the San Diego Padres.
Following completion of his fellowship program Dr. Van den Berghe and his family moved back to the Kansas City area and he joined Apex Orthopedics. Dr. Van den Berghe still enjoys taking care of patients and athletes of all ages, from the very young to the young at heart. He cares for a variety of injuries including rotator cuff tears, broken bones (fractures), dislocations, torn ligaments and torn tendons.
